Pooped Person Protests Poisoned Plans
According to my personal itinerary I was going arrive at my room around noon and spend the afternoon going to the Dutch Resistance Museum (dedicated to the stories of Dutch citizens who went out of their way to help the persecuted during WW2) and Our Lord of the Attic (a 1660's canal house that secretly housed a Catholic church when Catholicism was banned)- two Rick Steves recommendations. My exhaustion, coupled with cold, dreary, rainy weather changed my mind. I needed an easy, relaxing day- and I got one.
Cars Will Hit You
One thing was immediately clear once I got to my room. I wasn't going far. I was too tired for any lengthy walks and the weather was less than pleasant- raining off and on and quite chilly. I decided my best bet was to walk to the grocery store and get a few things for my room. I knew some fresh air would revive me and make me feel better- as would a meal. Then, maybe a movie and a good snuggle in my bed and an early bedtime.
As I walked from the Marnixkade (my street) to the Westerstraat, I had to walk across a crazy intersection, some of which can be seen in the picture below. The bike lanes are steadily busy and you put yourself in grave danger if you forget that. In the places where cars were, it was even crazier. As a pedestrian you need to be very aware. I had just crossed the intersection where you see the little white car, with a man right behind me. The man was not quick to get out of the street- was not aware of his surroundings. As he paused, a vehicle that was backing up into a parking spot bumped him. Fortunately the vehicle was moving slowly and the man was bruised but not broken. Reminder to self: Be very, VERY aware!

Memorable Moment
Such a long day! But as I walked home from the market, I took this picture and was overjoyed by the canal view- even under dreary skies.
