The Catacombs
I had a lovely day with Helen.
We left the hotel around 8:30 to get in line early for the Catacombs opening at 10. Even arriving at 9:15, we didn't get into the tunnels until 11:30. By then the line had wrapped around the huge block completely, making for a 4-5 hour line.
After descending a ton of stairs we finally entered the Catacombs- absolutely fascinating. It was strange to be down there, so sobering that these MILLIONS of bones arranged so artistically were once living, breathing, human beings like you and me. Would they be glad to be preserved and displayed to the public in such a manner, or would they be mortified? Something to think about...

Stop! This is the empire of death
It is sometimes cheaper to die than live
Paris Stroll
Holocaust Deportation Memorial
We followed up the Catacombs with lunch at an outdoor café.
Helen then took me on an emotional visit to the "hidden" Holocaust Deportation Memorial. Only recently have the Parisians taken responsibility for their part in the deportations. Their memorial is haunting. Pictures aren't allowed there, so I only took the pictures of the flowers.

Seine River Cruise
Needing something more lively after the Memorial, we took a cruise on the River Seine. It was so peaceful I might have fallen asleep if not for the little girl behind me pulling my hair! It was a great new way to see the sights of the city.
The best way to end the day? Dessert and drinks! Cheers!
